Australia Day – January:
This national holiday commemorates the founding of the first European settlement in Australia, which happened in Sydney in 1788. Like Independence Day in America, the day is traditionally celebrated with picnics, barbecues, fireworks and sporting events. Australia Day is also the traditional day for towns and cities to hold Citizenship Ceremonies to welcome immigrants who have been granted citizenship.
ANZAC Day – January:
Held in April, ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance for those who have served in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during war time. The day is marked with a variety of memorial services, parades and reunions, with the largest taking place in Canberra at the Australian War Memorial. The day is also marked with a traditional game of Aussie Rules Football between Collingwood and Essendon, drawing one of the biggest yearly crowds to the MCG.
